Milestone achieved: WAMO is in the water

The biggest news this quarter is the successful deployment of the WAMO IoT sensor platform at La Fe Reservoir in Colombia on 12 June 2025. The solar-powered, autonomous platform, developed by consortium partner e.Ray, is now transmitting 19 water quality and environmental parameters every hour via LTE.

This marks the beginning of continuous, real-time ground truth collection at our primary pilot site. The WAMO data is already being used to calibrate and validate satellite-derived water quality parameters through the WOLF calibration engine, the core of SWIM's data fusion approach.

Machine learning delivers strong results

The ML pipeline developed by IHCantabria has completed its first evaluation cycle. The Support Vector Regression model achieved an R-squared of 0.92 and a Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency of 0.91 for streamflow prediction at the Colombian pilot sites, using only globally available data. This means SWIM can potentially provide useful discharge predictions even for river basins with no existing monitoring infrastructure.

Partnerships formalised

Formal Memoranda of Understanding have been signed with three key stakeholders in Colombia:

EPM (Empresas Publicas de Medellin) - Colombia's largest public utility, managing La Fe and Hidroituango reservoirs

Municipality of Envigado - Local authority with responsibility for the Las Palmas basin

University of Envigado - Academic partner supporting validation and capacity building

These partnerships make sure that SWIM's development is grounded in real user needs and validated by the people who will ultimately use the technology.

Water-related disasters in 2025 have caused nearly 5,000 deaths globally and over US$360 billion in economic losses. From the aftermath of the Valencia floods to flash droughts across the Mediterranean, the accelerating water cycle is making continuous monitoring more urgent than ever. SWIM's mission, to provide reliable, real-time water intelligence, is directly aligned with this global need.
