SWIM Quarterly Update, Q2 2026: Project Completion and What Comes Next

SWIM Quarterly Update, May 2026

The SWIM project concluded its 18-month programme on 30 April 2026. We are proud to share a summary of what was achieved and where we go from here.

Project objectives achieved

All six project objectives have been met, and the SWIM platform has reached Technology Readiness Level 4, validated in a relevant environment:

Water Quality Module: Fully deployed at La Fe Reservoir, integrating Copernicus Sentinel-2 data with WAMO sensor measurements. Computes chlorophyll-a, turbidity, suspended particulate matter, algal bloom indices, and Secchi depth.

Water Balance Module: ML-driven discharge prediction from globally available data, achieving R2 = 0.92 and NSE = 0.91, operational for poorly gauged and ungauged basins.

Natural Disaster Module: Flood and drought early warning for the Las Palmas Basin, integrating SAR-derived flood products from Copernicus Global Flood Monitoring.

WOLF Calibration Engine: Patent-filed technology that dynamically calibrates satellite-derived water quality against in-situ measurements and assigns confidence flags.

AI-DSS: Complete decision support system with ML pipeline, multilingual chatbot, role-based dashboards, and automated alert generation.

All deliverables submitted

All 15 project deliverables across five work packages have been submitted on schedule. Public deliverables are available on the SWIM Open Research page at theswimapp.com/open-research.

Integration testing completed

End-to-end integration testing was conducted in April 2026, validating the full data flow from satellite acquisition and sensor measurement through calibration, module processing, and dashboard delivery.

Exploitation and future evolution

The Business Innovation Plan (D5.4) identifies six key exploitable results and defines revenue models including SaaS subscriptions, managed monitoring services, and consulting. The future evolution roadmap (D5.5) sets out a two-phase post-project pathway:

Phase 1 (0 to 48 months): TRL4 to TRL7, multi-site validation, regulatory engagement, and product development.

Phase 2 (48+ months): TRL7 to TRL9, commercial deployment and market entry.
