Welcome to the first edition of the SWIM newsletter

We are happy to launch this newsletter as part of our effort to keep stakeholders, partners, and the wider water management community informed about the SWIM project’s progress.

What is SWIM?

SWIM (Surface Water Information Management) is an 18-month research and innovation project co-funded by the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) under Horizon Europe. Our consortium of five organisations from Cyprus, Germany, Spain, the USA, and Colombia is developing an integrated platform that fuses Copernicus Earth Observation satellite data with real-time IoT sensor measurements and artificial intelligence to support surface water management decisions.

The platform covers three areas:

  • Water Quality: Detecting harmful algal blooms, monitoring turbidity, chlorophyll-a, and other ecological indicators

    • Water Balance: Predicting water availability and hydrological stress using machine learning

      • Natural Disasters: Providing early warning for floods and droughts

    • Progress highlights (November 2024 to April 2025)

    • The SWIM website (theswimapp.com) is live, providing project information, team details, and access to public deliverables

      • The EO data ingestion pipeline (D2.1) has been delivered, establishing the automated framework for acquiring and processing Copernicus satellite data

        • Pilot study sites have been confirmed at La Fe Reservoir and Las Palmas Basin in Colombia

          • Stakeholder engagement is progressing in Medellin, with discussions underway with EPM, the Municipality of Envigado, and the University of Envigado

            • The Data Management Plan has been finalised, covering all project data in line with FAIR principles
