Approaching the finish line

As World Water Day 2026 approaches (22 March), the SWIM project is in its final months. We are happy to report that the platform has reached Technology Readiness Level 4 and is undergoing end-to-end integration testing.

System integration progress

The SWIM platform now integrates all components across five layers, from data ingestion through calibration, module processing, and AI-driven decision support to the user dashboard. The frontend, built with TypeScript and MapLibre GL, provides role-based views for different user types: field operators, water quality analysts, plant managers, and researchers.

AI chatbot goes live

The SWIM chatbot is now operational, providing conversational access to the platform's data and analytics in three languages (Spanish, German, English). Users can ask questions about water quality trends, request statistical summaries, and receive anomaly alerts in plain language.

Patent filed for WOLF

A priority patent has been filed for the WOLF calibration engine's dynamic water-quality calibration logic, protecting a key innovation that dynamically harmonises satellite measurements with in-situ sensor data.

World Water Day 2026: Water and Gender

This year's World Water Day theme, "Water and Gender," reminds us that water security is inseparable from equity. The UN World Water Development Report 2026 highlights how gender inequalities undermine global water security. SWIM's mission, to widen access to water intelligence through affordable, scalable monitoring technology, contributes to this goal by making advanced water management tools available to communities that have traditionally been left out of data-driven decision-making.

What happens after April 2026?

The SWIM platform does not end with the project. The consortium has developed a two-phase roadmap:

- Phase 1 (TRL4 to TRL7): Multi-site validation, regulatory engagement, product development over 0 to 48 months

- Phase 2 (TRL7 to TRL9): Commercial deployment and market entry

The team is actively pursuing follow-on funding opportunities through ESA, EIC, and regional innovation programmes. The SWIM website will remain live as a permanent resource.
